Upper Kitza

upperkitza01Upper Kitza is a tributary to the Kola river , we always fish the lower part of the Kitza from the bridge down to Junction in rotation as one of the Kola beats , and some times we use Lower Kitza as a free beat. Kitza is knowned to hold some of the biggest salmon in the Kola river system , many stories about big fish and the monster that got away , i have few personal experience on Kitza my self loosing monsters.

From the end of the road it is 30 minutes walk to the River , here is Sergei pumping air in the boat at the first pool we fished.

Kitza is a very long river , I had heard that the fishing can be excellant on the middle and the Upper Kitza after mid June. On the 20th June I explored the first 12 KM above the bridge , we went early morning by 4WD vehicle up river with Guide Sergei and a boat. We had a great adventure floating down the river all day long , endless pools , in fact we did had very little time for fishing as we had to rush down river to be in camp in the evening and we where not in camp until midnight.

It is a definate full time work for 2 hard working anglers to fish this 12km of a river in a long day. A typical Upper Kitza pool , lovely tail , taking spots above and also below and a short way to the next tail. ( sorry for the bad light in pictures it was a rainy day).

We must have been through at least 30 pools on our journey down the Kitza river , I hooked 5 salmon , lost 2 and landed 3 during this day.

I liked it very much , no doubt this part of the river have to be opperated next year and in the future.

The idea is to make a program full of excitements and fish diffrent rivers with in one week , and Upper Kitza would be a part of that program.

My plan is:
Party of 8 rods fish this adventurous safari river program, there will be three diffrent rivers to fish with in a week.
2 days 2 rods Upper Kitza.
2 days 2 rods Upper Kola river
2 days 4 rods Ura river.

These 8 rods will then fish on a rotation basis , each beat for 2 days , but only 1 day at a time and then to another river and then back later to the same beat. Every 2 rods will have a Guide and boat for floating down the river. All days will be long and hard work , early morning until late evening. Packed lunch on the river. The distance is not that long to the upper Kitza and Upper Kola from the Kola camp , but the ones going to Ura have to accept 1 and half hour drive. All in all I think the best is to stay in the Kola camp where you have all the comfort , the breakfast , dinner , place to sleep , sauna , showers etc.

We could either arrange for comfortable tents as showed on the pictures , only for sleeping , then meals , shower and sauna taking in the main camp , tents only a minute away from the camp , another options could be to add few more cabins to the Camp for this venue , but it would make the program more expensive.

upperkitza10The first week should start 21st June for 2008 and the last week should start on the 26th July , this should be the creme of the season and I am confident that the catch pr. rod pr. week should be betweene 5 and 20 salmon, and some very big fish mixed in. We are aiming here for big fish venue , not number of fish.

In fact , as informed earlier , this is the middle Kitza , 12km upstream from the bridge on the main road, the river is so much longer , the only way to fish the uppermost part of Kitza which must be very interesting is to fly with Helicopter to the top , and then stay on Kitza for the whole week floating down the river , this is a different venue and we should do it for 2 weeks , and then the first week and second week of July , this would be ideal for party of 4 friends willing to stay out in the wilderness for a whole week with out modern comfort.
