Verdal

In addition to salmon... sea trout, brown trout and char also abound.
The Verdal is one of Norway's main salmo rivers and one of the central Norway's best rivers for big fish.

verdal07Location
The town of Verdal is located in the County of NorthTrøndelag, and is one of the most important agricultural areas in the country. It is 90 kilomenters North East of Trondheim, Norway's third largest city. The region is famous for its tranquil wide open spaces with stretches of expansive mountain plains and majestic mountains.

The river

The Verdal River boasts two main tributaries, Helgåa and Inna, It starts near the Swedish border and runs through a changing landscape before reaching the Trondheim Fjord near the Verdal town center. The upper reaches of the Helgåa River tributary start around 1,100 metres (3,300 feet) above sea level in a wild and barren high plateau Most of this upper river valley has a profound V-shape formed as the river charges strongly between lakes and spectacular waterfalls on its way to the sea.

When the Helgåa and Inna rivers come together in the village of Vukk,  the water now flows as the Verdal River and widens as its flow becomes calmer.  A main feature in the Verdal valley is huge sand and gravel quarries due to huge deposits from the ice age period.

The Verdal River is also one of the few rivers in Central Norway that is not affected by any hydropower developments and is on the national list of protected rivers.

The Verdal is one of Central Norway’s main salmon rivers. The prime fishing stretch of the river is from the village of Stiklestad (national heritage centre) to Granfoss (a 40 metres high waterfall) on the Helgåa tributary, a total distance of  30 kilometres.

The total salmon run stretches 50 kilometres, including the upper parts of the Helgåa above the Granfoss and the Inna tributaries. The Granfoss has one of Norway’s highest and longest salmon ladders to enable salmon to utilise the upper stretches for spawning.

The accomodation at the Verdal River is the Thingvoll Farm.
