Want big salmon ? Fish Norway.
Angling Club Lax-á now offer for its clients the right to fish the Norwegian river Malselv, one of the country´s leading salmon rivers and a river English gentlemen discovered as early as 1840. Many famous anglers have fished the Malselv, among them Charles Ritz who fished the river in 1959 and left very content according to his book “A Fly Fishers life”
The Malselvfossen, or the falls, are a fantastic feature of this 30 km river. The falls have a 500 meter flow from top to bottom and the salmon navigate it carefully. They can be observed running the falls which adds great delight to a fishing trip to these parts.
What to expect? Some years back Norwegian salmon fishing was mainly discussed as a dying pastime as pen bred salmon were escaping from their pens in vast schools and contaminating the wild spawning as well as spreading desies. While this is still a problem in some parts of Norway, it is still fair to say that in some places, fishing has been picking up very impressively in the past few years. Malselv is one of those places. Over the last three years, the fishing has been way up from the typical totals in the nineties. In 2003 1.954 salmon were landed from the Malselv, the average weight being 10,6 pounds. Fish up to 36 pounds were recorded and 15 to 25 pounders are rather common.
Our Malselv beats are above the falls, catered by the Rundhaug Gjestgaard lodge. It is a comfortable lodge with excellent food and boarding. Salmon start to run the falls at the start of July.
