- Trammael
-
The Tranmæl beat is approximately 1 km long on both sides of the river. The beat offers an exciting salmon fishing with very good variety in beautiful surroundings. The chances of big catches are fair throughout the season, with the best weeks in July and August.
The beat is characterized by a glide that flows into a long pool followed by a very interesting part with lots of rocks and stones; great holding spots for the salmon. This part comes to a clear”edge” with rapids followed by yet another glide.
The Tranmæl-beat is situated approximately 10 km upstream the mouth of the river, which means that almost all salmon running up the Gaula during the season, will pass through or stop and hold along this particular beat.
For sure, this beat presents fair chances to catch really big fish during the June runs, but thanks to the long gravel- and sand bank along the entire beat, this is also a place for the salmon to stop and spawn through the entire fishing season. Great opportunities to catch middle-sized salmon and grilse from beginning of July and on.
Tranmæl can be fished on all water levels – from 300 m3 /sec (high water flow, measured in Gaulfossen) to extremely low late summer levels. The Tranmæl beat changes its characteristics to a great deal at different water levels, which presents the curious and skilled fisherman with constantly new challenges.
The beat is long and allows fishing on both sides - you’ll have no problems whatsoever being 8 fishermen or more at the same time on this beat.
- Fornesoyan
-
The beat Fornesøyan is situated approximately 15 kilometres from the mouth of river Gaula, by the crossing bridge nearby the village of Kvål.
This is a 600 metres long, double-sided beat with a wide gravel shore on one side, stretching over almost the entire beat’s length, and a stone bank on the other side. Both sides fish well in all water conditions, in high June water flows, as well as during low August levels.
This beat is easily accessible and easy to fish from both sides, regardless of your choice of fishing methods. At the top of the beat there is a typical Norwegian wind shelter – ”gapahauk” – with lots of space for the big group’s ”tactic talks”, coffee and lunch breaks.
The beat makes an S-turn from the top and downwards, which gives this it that very special look of a classic salmon fly fishing beat. This S-shape of the main stream gives a quite fast and even water flow, even at low water levels. The full beat is divided into two pools; Bruhølen and Fornesøyan.
- Evjen
-
Evjen is truly a majestic beat, offering some of the best fishing hat you can find in Gaula for really BIG salmon, especially early in the season, but also to some extent later into July.
The beat is close to the village of Lundamo, some 25 kilometers upstream from the river Gaula’s inlet and a couple of kilometers downstream the rapids of Gaulfossen. Here, the river flows strong through this fruitful agricultural district that dominates this part of the valley. On its way down to the ocean, the powerful water shapes slightly new gravel banks and bottom pits every year, especially interesting for us salmon fishers.
Our beat is consists of approximately a 1300 meters long fishable length and hold a variation of small rapids, fast flowing water and good holding spots for the salmon. The beat starts at the top with some shallower gravel banks that speed up the water before ”the grand finale”; a very visible, strong rapid over rocks and gravel. After that rapid the beat changes its character quite dramatically and becomes deeper and calmer, yet very strong.
This lower part of Evjen, that always holds BIG salmon in the deep, is a hard challenge for any experienced salmon fisher. But the chance of catching is always very near! Down by the river bank you have the typical Norwegian wooden ”gapahauk” wind shelter.
This gapahauk is actually placed in one of the most interesting spots i the Gaula valley; there’s no better place to sit and scout for rising/running salmon at dawn or dusk. Or, in fact, in the middle of the day in bright sunlight! When you see the first fish show in the shallower rapids right outside the shelter, then you know it’s time to grab the tackle and go for it!
Evjen has many great spots to fish from on its entire length, all with different characteristics, challenges and benefits. The beat is long and gives plenty of room for 6 fishermen.
