Week 6: 3rd to 10th of february:

For our sixth week at Kau Tapen we welcomed a group composed of repeaters and some anglers that came for their first time to try the Rio Grande’s experience. They were from South Africa, United Kingdom, Scotland, United States of America and Iceland. We started the week with low water and as we didn’t have any real rain, the water level keeps dropping which make the water condition more difficult here. The weather conditions were tough as well with very strong to heavy wind and colder air temperature.

The river is very clear still and now lower than before, and also colder (7 to 10°C). It was more challenging to catch fish this week but we managed to hook and land a good amount of fish.
Due to those conditions the fishing was quite tough but our guests did a great job going out every single session despite the cold and the strong wind and tried hard to get some fish. The guide team did a real great job, moving from pool to pool to cover water and find the taking fish.
We have been using the same technique, floating line with long leader, small nymph and buggers. We went down with sink tips this week more than the previous week and the water was colder and the fish not so active. There is still some fresh fish but most of our fish have been in the river for some days or weeks and start to be quite coloured. The water level doesn’t help much to have fish coming up river.
We got some very nice fish and action while fishing at dark with the moon up above our head. It such a nice scene to cast in the darkness, strip a leech and get a good take, then few jumps and run after your fish! The fish have been quite active 30 mn before dark.

The full moon was on the 7th so some fresh silver bars should come up and give our guests some great fight and screaming reels. Some rain will be great to have some rising water bringing fish from down river.

We had this week a group of 6 South Africans that never fished for sea trout and never used double handed rod and they learnd day by day and were casting pretty well and have improve a lot their casting. They all caught some good fish.
The biggest fish for the week are three 20 pounders, caught by three different guests. So well done guys!
We had two “top rod” this week, Jonathan from South Africa and Ian from U.K. and both of them never fished the Rio Grande before!

It was a very good group with entertaining guests and we had great time here at Kau Tapen, sharing good laughs and nice time with them. Our guests were vey please to experiment for their first time or once again the Kau Tapen experience and most of them plan to come back next year, or in a near future.

We hope to see you soon,

Cheers,

Last summer I went with my boyfriend, my sister and her daughter to a summer hut. The plan was to spend a nice cozy weekend in the hut Heklubyggð, barbeque in the evenings and just have a few relaxing days. On Saturday we decided to go fishing in a small lake that was nearby.

We start in the morning and head to the area around glacier Eyjafjallajökull. We drive on rough roads and cross numerous glacier rivers to reach Thorsmörk glacier and volcano valley. We spend some time exploring these adventurous surroundings. In the early afternoon we leave this lovely rugged environment and drive down to the black basalt sand shore south of Eyjafjallajökull-glacier. Right here by the Atlantic Ocean we experience the enhanced driving ability with the partly deflated 38" tires. In the end off the day we head back to Rangá lodge.
