West Rangá II
A new West Rangá adventure

The River

westrangaii03The whole of West Rangá catch in 2008 was a the highest in Iceland with 14.315 which is a record.  In 2009 we kept the 1st place with 10.749 salmon.  We have now extended our smolt relasing program to include the upper West Rangá(Ytri Rangá), from above the waterfall Árbæjarfoss up to the top part below Mt. Hekla. The fish ladder at Árbæjarfoss was improved last spring, and this summer huge numbers of salmon ran the falls allowing anglers to enjoy excellent sport on the beautiful upper beats.

Each year we have been increasing the number of smolts released on the upper beats which significally has enhanced the upriver fishing.  The beats are still something of a research program, as anglers are still finding where the preferred salmon lies, and you could probably say the same about the salmon themselves.

The best time above the falls is from August 1st until the end of the season.

This is a minimum service package including the fishing, a self catering lodge and a self driving car (driven by yourself of course). Optional guide service will be available for those who require, which is a smart move as this is quite an extensive beat. We recommend that anglers employ at least one guide for every 3 – 4 rods.

Tackle disinfection: Iceland has always been free of diseases like UDN and Gyrodactylus salaris and we intend to keep it that way. There is a strict policy of visiting anglers having their tackle sterilized before coming to Iceland. This should be done in a 2% formaldehyde solution for 10 minutes and performed by a veterinary surgeon. (Tackle sterilized in Virkon S is also acceptable.) A signed inventory of what has been sterilized should be provided by the vet for presentation to the customs officers at Keflavik airport. The most important items to be treated are: rods, reel/line, waders and flies.

The process can be carried out by staff at Keflavik airport. The office is located at the far side of the baggage reclaim hall, downstairs in the airport. Just notify one of the personnel in the area that you need your tackle disinfected and they will have a member of the staff come and complete the process. The price for one fishing set is 3.500 Icelandic kronurs.
