Laugardalsá

Anglers fall in love with Laugardalsá.

The River

laugardalsa_28.jpg laugardalsa_23.jpg
Delicate fishing, only floating line, weight 3 to 6, small flies 10 - 16 and fine leader of 6 - 10 pounds, this is what Laugardalsa is all about!

From one of the best pools on the river , the Blámýrarfljót pool, normally this pool is loaded with fish, but very sensitive.
laugardalsa_24 laugardalsa_2
Laugardalsa is one of the top salmon rivers of Iceland, tis 2.5 rod river provides 400 - 500 salmon is a very short season of only 75 days.  Picture is from pool Ponta, great place for fresh salmon.
laugardalsa_27
Pool number 14, Simastreigur can often be good. Be well prepared , but all you need in fact is the lighter tackle, 3 - 5 weight full floater, long leader 3 - 4 meters of 8 - 10lbs braking streinght, hitch tubes, micro tubes and your smalles flies in the box 10 - 16, will do the job, lots of stripping.

Dagmálafljót pool, one of the best pools, great holding pool.

Sensitive waters, be smart and you catch fish. Grímhólshylur pool, one of the best, lot of fish around in this pool.
laugardalsa_3 laugardalsa_32
And fish is on in Grimhólshylur!

From the Lambatangafljót. The river mouth of Laugardalsa.
laugardalsa_11 laugardalsa_25
From the Upper Laugardalsa, above the lake, this section belongs to the lower river as well, this is wild place and holds some good fish and plenty of Brown Trout. Vaka on the watch when salmon is on the hook!

From the top section of the upper Laugardalsa. Playing a salmon early morning at Grímhólshylur.
laugardalsa_17 laugardalsa_18
Number 17 pool, Rudningur, excellant pool for fresh salmon on the run. Playing a salmon on a 3 weight and micro tube, hook number 16, 8 pound test.

Vala in to one in Dagmálafljót, this day we landed 11 salmon. View from the upper river coming down to the lake.

Skotta watching carefully when playing a fish, they are getting more like a salmon dogs than hunting bird dogs. Playing a salmon on Blámýrarfljót.
laugardalsa_35 laugardalsa_14
Fresh one from the lower river. 2009 season was great for Laugardalsá river with 501 salmon caught. Laugardalsá is one of our most popular self catering rivers and is usually well booked in advance.
laugardalsa_21 laugardalsa_1
Every now and then openings become available so it might be worth while to state your interest in advance and we may be able to do something for you. From the upper part of the Laugardalsá, the outflow from the lake.
laugardalsa_37 laugardalsa_36
Salmon recovering after having been released. The river, you could say, has two faces, the fast running rocky face on the lower river, and the tranquil easy going face of the slow running pools on the upper river. Both faces are exciting to fish.
laugardalsa_34 laugardalsa_20
Often, when the mood is right, anglers are pulling salmon out of the pools almost as fast as they can recover their composure from the last fight, to get their flies back into the river.

Best flies for Laugardalsa is Black and Blue sizes 10 to 16, riffling hitch tubes works very well.
Even a slow day on the Laugardalsá leaves an angler content as he will have seen plenty of fish and probably had some action. A good day leaves an angler exhausted! Peak weeks of the season will offer catches comparable to the best salmon rivers in Iceland. Laugardalsá has about 6 km of fishing with 18 pools.
It is the perfect 2 to 3  rod river, easy to fish, full of fish. A good choice for small groups looking for exclusive fishing on an intimate setting.
The river is in a very remote area, you have the valley and the river all for your self.

The landscape of the Westfjords is breathtaking with great mountains rising up from the sea. Westfjords region is steeped in its history of witchcraft and magic, you could say finding its way into the angling in the region, and offers many points of interest for non-fishers.

Tackle disinfection: Iceland has always been free of diseases like UDN and Gyrodactylus salaris and we intend to keep it that way. There is a strict policy of visiting anglers having their tackle sterilized before coming to Iceland. This should be done in a 2% formaldehyde solution for 10 minutes and performed by a veterinary surgeon. (Tackle sterilized in Virkon S is also acceptable.) A signed inventory of what has been sterilized should be provided by the vet for presentation to the customs officers at Keflavik airport. The most important items to be treated are: rods, reel/line, waders and flies.

The process can be carried out by staff at Keflavik airport. The office is located at the far side of the baggage reclaim hall, downstairs in the airport. Just notify one of the personnel in the area that you need your tackle disinfected and they will have a member of the staff come and complete the process. The price for one fishing set is 3.500 Icelandic kronurs.
