Hvannadalsá

The River

Hvannadalsa018Hvannadalsa is one of our new rivers on the West Coast of Iceland, a beautiful and remote place. In 2005-2007 about 160 salmon was caught yearly to 2 rods in a short season. In the spring 2007 we made a great effort in releasing smolts, we released 25.000 smolts, which producted 327 salmon in 2008. The river is delightful to fish with the fly and the surrounding country side is unique, here you are alone with Iceland.

We have moved and renovate the old Langadalsa lodge to Hvannadalsá which  will change a lot all facilities for anglers. There are 3 rods to be fished in Hvannadalsá from 2009.
Catches
170 salmon in 2005
154 salmon in 2006
150 salmon in 2007
327 salmon in 2008
212 salmon in 2009

Riffling hitch is the best method for Hvannadalsa during the high summer when the watertemperature is over 10C°. Fishing in to the last light at pool Ardalsfljot, one of the best pools on the river.

Imbufljot is a wonderful pool for the riffling hitch. View down river to water fall Djupi foss and to the sea.

From the middle river. Hitching the fly at Rettarhylur pool.

From Ardalsfljot pool, here you will see salmon jumping a lot.
Ideal combination: The Hvannadalsá combines with anyone of our fine rivers provided you don't mind a few hours drive through breathtaking scenery. Laugardalsá and Langadalsá are close to Hvannadalsá.  Hvannadalsá shares the river mouth with Langadalsá, still it has considerably more water then her sister, Langadalsá.  The salmon in Hvannadalsá is known to be husky and thick - great fighters.

Happy anglers We release normally 3000 - 4000 smolts yearly on the Hvanndalsa, in 2007 we reased 25.000 smolts from the river origin, which produced 327 salmon in 2008.

In addition to the salmon fishing one can catch a good deal of sea-trout in the river mouth around the tides.
Hvannadalsa is gin clear, you can spot Salmon in most of the places from rocks and on the edge of the canyons. The salmon is shy so you have to be very careful!

Tackle disinfection: Iceland has always been free of diseases like UDN and Gyrodactylus salaris and we intend to keep it that way. There is a strict policy of visiting anglers having their tackle sterilized before coming to Iceland. This should be done in a 2% formaldehyde solution for 10 minutes and performed by a veterinary surgeon. (Tackle sterilized in Virkon S is also acceptable.) A signed inventory of what has been sterilized should be provided by the vet for presentation to the customs officers at Keflavik airport. The most important items to be treated are: rods, reel/line, waders and flies.

The process can be carried out by staff at Keflavik airport. The office is located at the far side of the baggage reclaim hall, downstairs in the airport. Just notify one of the personnel in the area that you need your tackle disinfected and they will have a member of the staff come and complete the process. The price for one fishing set is 3.500 Icelandic kronurs.

Road instructions: The cabin is located in Langidalur 50 km from Hólmavík.  When driving from Hólmavík you should take route nr 61 and follow the roadsign that points to Ísafjörður. Drive through Steingrímsfjarðarheiði until you reach a roadsign on the right hand that says veganúmer 635 (route 635). Go past that sign and a couple of meters ahead  on the left hand there is a road-information-stop (small area to park the car, it has benches and an informationsign). The next turn is the dirt road that leads to Langidalur. You follow the dirt road into the valley past a couple of summerhouses or other lodges which are on the left hand side. 4 km later the Langadalsá-river-lodge is on your right hand side. But to get to the Hvannadalsá-river-cabin you drive past Langadalsá-river-cabin and follow the road 2 km. Then you should arrive at Hvannadalsá-river-cabin on the left. The lodge is white. You don’t have to go over the Langadalsá-river bridge to get to the cabin.
