Very good self catering river
- The River
The Flókadalsá is a reliable river, with 724 caught salmon in season 2010. Somehow the Flóka, as it is usually called locally, holds a tremendous standard and never wilts while other rivers tend to swing up and down. This is probably due to a very stable water level, as long draughts that are not uncommon in Iceland, hardly touch the water level.
The Flóka is also a naturally fine producer of salmon juveniles. Flóka offers nearly 17 km of fishing, giving plenty of room for each rod. While Flóka normally has good numbers of fish in each pool, this is a challenging and “sensitive” river, demanding light tackle and a stealthy approach. Crawling will at times be the way to go.
The most successful anglers use light, single-handed rods balancing a 5 to a 7 weight floating line and present small flies with the most delicate casts possible. Don’t forget the hitch - Flókadalsá is made for it! Then, if the hitch only makes them grumble and follow, try stripping the small fly on a floating line, then strip on an intermediate and if all fails, yet they are still following, grab the depth charges! Use a sinking one inch Snælda tube fly! That will usually work wonders.
This is a wonderful river with a lodge to match by the river bank. It has 4 double rooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining and sitting room.
