East Ranga

One of Iceland´s most productive river for over 10 years

With increasing knowledge and practice of conservation managament, East Rangá has well earned its place among Iceland´s top Salmon rivers.

Fishing is on eight beats over a 22 km stretch of river offering a nice variety of waters and lots of space.

The river and its suroundings is beautiful and gives anglers energy and feeds their soul.  Mountain Hekla, the legendary volcano, is in plain view and  gives good energy to everyone around it.

General Information

Location: South of Iceland, about 95 km from Reykjavik. Take Highway 1 South towards Selfoss. Drive through Selfoss towards Hella. Drive through Hella towards Hvolsvöllur.  A few hundred meters before Hvolsvöllur is a sign on your left hand side that says Eystri Rangá Veiðihús. Turn left at that sign and drive a few hundred meters and turn left where there is a fork on the road, then you see the lodge at your left hand side. The lodge is a complex, comprised of 8 buildings, combined with veranda.

Fishing season: June 24th to September 3rd.
Prime time: July 10th to August 25th
Average catch: 5 year average 4867 (16 rods)
Average size of fish: 5-6 lbs.

June 23rd –August 1st  07:00-13:00 & 16:00-22:00
August 2nd – September 15th 07:00-13:00 & 15:00-21:00
Guide: One per two rods
Lodge: Full service lodge, private room with bathroom to each rod, living room, dining room, bar, jacuzzi, wader drying room.
Tackle: Double handed rods 13 - 15', weight 9-11, sink tip lines recommended.
Best flies: East Rangá shares many common traits with West Rangá and Tungufljót, it’s cold and fishes best with tubes, ¼ - 1 inch. As in West Rangá and Tungufljót, sink tips are a must but sometimes smaller tubes and/or regular flies can be the most effective. The best flies for East Rangá are.
Bismo (light tube - Local Fly)
SunRay Shadow (1 inch)
Snaelda (¼ - ½ inch)
Black & Blue (½ inch, cone head)
Collie Dog (½ - 1 inch)
Pool Fly (local fly)

As in West Rangá, Tungufljót and all other autumn rivers, as temperature drops the tubes get bigger/heavier. The same patterns apply, just a little heavier.

 

Clothing: In spite of the relatively mild climate, you should bring warm clothing and, most importantly, quality rainwear and a windcheater. Please check out the average temperature table here below. Chest waders and wading shoes. Nicer clothes to wear for dinner.

Tackle disinfection: Iceland has always been free of diseases like UDN and Gyrodactylus salaris and we intend to keep it that way. There is a strict policy of visiting anglers having their tackle sterilized before coming to Iceland. This should be done in a 2% formaldehyde solution for 10 minutes and performed by a veterinary surgeon. (Tackle sterilized in Virkon S is also acceptable.) A signed inventory of what has been sterilized should be provided by the vet for presentation to the customs officers at Keflavik airport. The most important items to be treated are: rods, reel/line, waders and flies.

The process can be carried out by staff at Keflavik airport. The office is located at the far side of the baggage reclaim hall, downstairs in the airport. Just notify one of the personnel in the area that you need your tackle disinfected and they will have a member of the staff come and complete the process. The price for one fishing set is 3.500 Icelandic kronurs.

Documentation & Visas

Citizens from the European Economic Area (comprising the EU, Switzerland and Liechtenstein), US and Canada need only a passport valid for at least three months after the planned date of arrival to enter Iceland for up to three months.



Currency: Icelandic Krona. Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard credit cards and Maestro and Visa Electron are accepted widely.



Language: Icelandic, but Icelanders speak English as well.



Electricity. Most facilities operate on 220-wolt, 50-cycle system. A Converter will be necessary for any electrical items that require a 110-volt, 60-cycle system.



Duty-free: Allowed on arrival one of the following choices:

1 lither of alcohol and 1 lither of wine.

1 lither of alcohol and 6 lither of beer.

1 lither of wine and 6 lither of beer.

One carton of cigarettes can be brought in to the country per person

In case of an emergency dial 112, but guide and lodge staff will be insistence for any problems that might occur.

If you want to hire fishing equipment, please send us the name and the shoe-size for each individual. And please let us know if a single or double handed rod is preferred.

Accommodation

In 2001 we opened our lovely 770sqm exclusive fishing lodge centrally located at the river offering a panoramic view of the spectacular snow-capped Mt. Hekla. The lodge complex is comprised of 8 buildings, all combined with 1500sqm veranda, Jacuzzi and sauna.

Guests are accommodated in tastefully furnished double rooms with a private bath. One main building houses the kitchen and spacious dining area where gourmet meals are served.

The second main building houses a spacious living room with a full service bar. There are 18 double rooms with a private bathroom with a shower.
