arnarvatnsheidi03Eleven years ago, I entered in a nice restaurant in down-town Milan, and with much of surprise I noted on the walls, many oil paints representing fly fishing scene in a very peculiar natural setting. When I asked the waiter, he explains that the painter was the owner, a very passionate fly-fisherman, and that the peculiar land was Iceland. A week later I was seat with Giovanni Leombianchi in his studio in Milan, to listen fantastic stories about Salmon fly-fishing in Iceland, in small intimate rivers were the water is like mineral sparkling water and were salmon come-up from the black lava stone bottom, to catch a small fly skating on the water surface. For me, use to fish in Norway with a sinking line and a 16 feet, double-hand road, this sound like a divine revelation ! Immediately I decided to change my booking for the following season and follow Giovanni advise to call Arni Baldursson from Angling club Lax-a and book a week on West Ranga for the last week of July. Today I can list in my diary more than fifteen different Icelandic rivers, all over the country, all of them with different character but same charm, and Lax-a has always granted to me many friends I brought to Iceland in this years, a perfect organisation, honest advise and friendly service and guides. Today I try to fish small-medium rivers with light equipment, and the so called Riffle-hitch,which is by far my favourite way to catch salmon. In Iceland I become a better fisherman, not only because I have improved my technique, but also because nowadays every time I catch and released a fish, I seat on a rock for a wile, watching the nature around me and let my soul to absorbed the energy of this Magic moment.
