 |
The three of us went on a separate boat. After arriving on the 22nd at Hotel Rancho in Nueva Gerona, we fixed all the necessary licenses and prepared to start fishing early in the morning of the 23rd. We fished ten hours a day until the 5th of September, starting every day by launching our boat in a River called "Jucaro", 15 minutes from the hotel. Weather was good 70% of the time, despite being at the beginning of the hurricane season.
The exploratory trip to Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth/Pines) got under way on the 20th of August. The chosen guides for the expedition were the very enthusiastic Koki and Pedrito, plus Pepe. We brought the 16 footer "Tiburon" on a trailer from Jucaro to Batabano where we put our GMC Suburban, the skiff plus and our Fiat Doblo on a ferry. |

|
| Spotting bonefish. |
The area is huge; more or less like Jardines de la Reina with white sandy beaches, mixed coral and deep turtle grass. You are inside a marine park, and nearly all the Cayos offer good fishing. |
 |
 |
We found every possible scenario; for those familiar with Jardines there are places like La Cruces, Chocolate, la Lisa etc. Over the course of two full weeks, we fished over thirty different flats at different tides which is less than 30% of the entire archipelago!
We have plenty of water to spare.
 |
 |
WEATHER PROTECTION
The area is very protected and we believe we will only very rarely need to cancel fishing due to bad weather. Occasionally, there may be a short run to another spot through some rough water due to a cold front, but within a matter of minutes you will reach new flats away from the wind.
BONEFISH
Some of the best we have ever seen. The fish are huge, averaging over 5lbs with double digit fish seen every day. The fish are also the least spooky you can imagine. We caught all the fish with 30 lbs leader (we forgot anything lighter) and some casts were only 3 feet!
This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for bonefish lovers; the last place in the world where you can experience this kind of "never seen a fisherman" bonefish population.
Wading, poling, tailing; you got it all. We even caught fish on some flats despite the completely wrong tide. The trophy size fish and the different types of fishing will make this incredibly interesting fishing even to the most experienced fishermen.
TARPON
We saw schools of Tarpon every day and caught numbers of fish , both in channels , in the open sea and in the mangroves.
We didn’t fish some very nice spots we found because a lack of time, but we believe the Tarpon fishing may be even as good as Jardines de la Reina, especially during Febr.- June.
PERMIT
We saw Permit on 5 different flats, up to 20lbs; good news is that there were plenty of 10lbs fish which, as everybody knows, are the ones that usually get caught. In a couple of spots we believe you can get a grand slam without moving from the same flat!
GUIDES
We are training six local guides from the island and we will choose the four best; they are all fishermen and extremely enthusiastic.
- The Programm
HOTEL
Hotel Rancho is a comfortable 3 star hotel with single rooms, hot water, A/C and very friendly staff. The cooking will need some improvement, but that should be easy and we are already working on this.
ITINERARY
The week includes six full days of fishing, starting Sunday. Guests may arrive Saturday morning, Saturday evening or very early Sunday morning. Flight from Havana is twenty five minutes, and transfer from the airport to the hotel is only ten minutes.
SEASON
This new destination has some differences from Jardines:
1. We operate from an existing hotel which means a little more time before you are out on the water, but it offers the possibility of enjoying the “Cuban life”;
2. It includes six full days of fishing and 8 days total with one in Havana too;
3. Logistics are easy for guests arriving from Havana;
4. We can only accommodate groups of maximum 8 anglers.
We will have four “Dolphins skiffs” with four of our guides and we suggest our guests
bring their own equipment. We are expecting great fishing in the Natural park of Isla de la Juventud; basically similar to the Jardines, but we still need to learn more about the flats, tides etc.
