Rio Gallegos/Bella Vista

The River

RioGallegos_VellaVista012On the mainland of Argentina on the other side of the Magellan ocean just an half an hour flight away from Rio Grande is the famous Rio Gallegos river, another sea trout river in the same quality as the Rio Grande river.

Rio Gallegos is though very different river from Rio Grande, it´s is a similar size of RG, have fewer pools but longer.

The character of Rio Gallegos is rather slow flowing river with some rocky beds, you need to be a skilful angler to fish Rio Gallegos, it´s more technical river than Rio Grande, choosing the right fly, stripping the line for different speeds is something you have to do continuously on the Rio Gallegos.

Good conditions on Rio Gallegos , claudy day with a little wind and ribbles on the water.

You may not expect the same amount of fish on the Rio Gallegos as on the Rio Grande but every fish is a real joy as you have to work for your award. The landscape is beautiful, hills, slopes and lot of beautiful rocks around. Rio Gallegos is the river of delicate fishing, floating line, small flies and careful wading. The Bella Vista lodge is an old estancia living house, all refurnished and have been changed in a nice way in to a fishing lodge.

RioGallegos_VellaVista003The guides and the staff is all hard working in making your holiday as pleasant as possible.

The best time for Rio Gallegos is late February , March and until middle of April. The size of the fish is more or less the same as on the Rio Grande, perhaps slightly smaller average weight or around 9 pounds, biggest fish on the season is around 25 pounds and several fish over 20 pounds is landed every season. Double handed rods is recommended 13-14 foot for line 9-10.

Most of the time you use floating line, in case of high water bring some sink tips. For dry fly fishing single handed rod is useful, 9-10 foot, weight 7-9.

Best flies are Streamers, Dry Flies and Nymphs, relatively small sizes, remember in the evening you need something bigger and in black colour.

There is daily 2 and ½ hour flights from Buenos Aries to Rio Gallegos.

For those who want to stay 2 weeks seatrout fishing in Argentina it´s ideal to take one week at Rio Grande and one week at Rio Gallegos.
