Rio Corrientes

Rio Corriente, Estancia El Dorado, Corrientes province.  Northern Argentina

General Information

RioCorrientes004Located in the province of Corrientes, in the northeast of Argentina, Estancias el Dorado stands out as a typical Argentine ranch upon the Corriente river. As it is very close to the Corriente river, it allows to fish its clear banks almost all along its course, sight fishing or searching for the most powerful hook-ups of the large dorados on the river banks.

The Dorado (Salminus Maxillosus) or "the Tiger of the Paraná" is a very aggressive fish for sport fishing. Although the dorado may reach 30 pounds, the average size in the Corriente river has held between 4 and 12 pounds, but there are also larger ones.

Testimonials

My five day stay at the Estancias El Dorado couldn´t have been better. The Dorado caught ranged from 3 to 11 lbs. with 7 of the 60 between 7-11 pounds. Thus, the fish were there and the water conditions were excellent: medium high, clear and warm. What seemed to be the secret of their biting so well was not strictly the fly color but where the fly was placed. The closer to the bottom at mid stream using a drift technique (aka Atlantic Salmon) instead of retrieving brought the strikes. Line weights used were 250-500 grains. The former with weighted flies; the latter with unweighted. As for which fly, all the recommended Dorado flies (dark to light) for the Ibera region worked well. The only caveat was that they be full bodied which meant replacing them after 2-3 fish. The Dorado´s reputation for chewing them up is to the point!!
