Information about the Animals
Vaal/Grey Rhebuck (PELEA CAPREOLUS)
These are shy mountain dwelling antelope that are extremely vigilant and a great challenge to hunt. They are often revered by hunters as ‘the Baby Buff’ because of the difficult hunting factor. Although these animals are rare, the Rhodes area boasts quite a large number of them in herds of 2 – 14.
Shoulder height 75cm and mass about 20-25kg’s,
greyish brown with white under parts. Only the males have straight, ringed horns that average 6-7 inches and with the minimum Roland Ward requirements at 7. 7/8’’.
Rhodes area produces a number of these magnificent trophies each year that measure around 8-9’’.
Mountain Reedbuck (REDUNCA FULVORUFULA)
These reddish, grey antelope with white under parts are more common but also prefer mountainous areas. They are often extremely sensitive and vigilant but not as difficult to hunt.
Shoulder height 75cm and mass 25-35kg.
Solitary males are often found but generally herds of 3 – 8 can be seen.
They have heavily ridged horns that hook forward and the Roland Ward requirement is 6.7/8’’. This mark is often better in the Rhodes area.
Blesbuck (DAMALISCUS DORCAS PHILLIPSI)
These are typical Southern African plains game and are quite common. They are beautifully coloured in a reddish brown short hair with white under body, tail and forehead.
They can be found in herds of over a hundred and although not as challenging to hunt, herds can become weary of potential hunters.
Both males and females have heavily ridged horns, which curve back from the head then swing outwards, the smooth tips curving evenly forward.
Shoulder height is about 95cm and mass can be between 60 – 70kg’s.
Horn lengths often average 14-15 inches but 16’’+ trophies are often shot in our area.
Black Wildebeest
This is also one of Southern Africa’s sought after plains game that are often found in herds that are lead by the dominant bull.
They are buffy brown in colour and old males often turn black with long white mane and tails. The head is elongated with high, upstanding mane and a beard of long black hair. Both sexes have horns, which arise from expanded bases and sweep downward and forward to curve upward about the end of the muzzle.
Shoulder height about 1,2m and mass about 170-180kg.
Horn lengths average 16-18’’ but 20-22 inch trophies are not uncommon.
Greywing Francolin
These are magnificent game birds that are extremely popular amongst purists in the hunting field. They are considered of the sportiest of all game birds in the world and are hunted with shotguns, on the wing over English Pointer hunting dogs.
These birds are found in coveys of 8-30 birds in high lying grassland areas. They bombshell when flushed and speed away gracefully to regroup on a later occasion after calling individuals back.
The bag limit on these birds is 6-10 per person per day.
