The Icelandic Angling Summer 2010

Written by Emil

Here is a little summary of  figures from our rivers this year. Like most people who follow the angling in Iceland we have had a great summer of fishing regardless of the dry season. But when the sun slowly begins to sit and the temperature decreases the rivers are full of life.

A couple of rivers broke their own record this year with the wildcard beeing the majestic Blanda river that had over 400 more salmon more than last year. We havent yet gotten the final figures but we are working on it. Our last figures are 2769 and are from September 1st, we know that more have been caught in the last couple of days so it's exiting to see what the final figures will be. The river closed september 5th.

East Ranga has been very good but figures from September 1st say 4721 which makes it the top Icelandic salmon river for the time beeing. The fishing last year in East Ranga was less than this years but still was very good. The figures from West Ranga just exploded after August 29th but that was the day worm fishing was allowed in the river but in only two days 516 salmon were landed. According to figures aquired on september 1st, West Ranga is in second place with 4452 salmon landed.

We heard from Kristján the Hvannadalsa and Langadalsa rivers manager to day, he said that they are experiencing much warmth and sun and have been for the last couple of months. Now is still quite the dry season and waterlevels are low. Regardless, there has been exelent fishing in both rivers but the figures that we got August 30th in Langadalsa there were 219 salmon landed and 365 in Hvannadalsa.

In further news. We just received a letter from Siggi Marri an angler that was fishing in Krossa, he said that waterlevels are low but 127 salmon have been landed. I have to point out that Krossa is a late summer/fall river with only 2 rods so 127 salmon landed today is better than most other years.  There is alot of fish in the river but it's only allowed to land 3 per day, per rod.

We will add more news of the rivers as soon as possible, stay tuned. And again (if you read the Tungufljot article), just a reminder we are now booking for next year.

Tight Lines, Emil

Opening_Dee_2011_Jock_Royan_110210_1.jpg

The 2012 salmon fishing season commenced 1st of February at River Dee with the traditional opening ceremony held this year at the Potarch Bridge. The opening ceremony was very well attended with around 250 people gathered on the river bank to watch TV personality Paul Whitehouse perform the ceremonial cast and entertain the audience. There were 30 salmon reported on opening day with the first fish of the season landed at 9.45 am by delighted angler Graeme Scott with a nice 12lb fish at Commonty. The heaviest fish on opening day were actually two, both 36 inches. Two salmons were caught on our Lower Crathes beat with angler Greig Thomson catching one and losing another fish at the net shortly before the first catch.

Greenland is the wildest place on earth for char fishing.  This is the biggest island in the world, and in fact one of biggest countries as well. Greenland is inhabited with only 55.000 people, sharing thousands of rivers and lakes, full of Arctic Char.  This means that many of those fishing areas are hardly fished at all, some rivers have not seen an angler - ever. You will catch Searun Arctic Char from 1 – 7 lbs.  The fishing is on a vouluntary catch and release basis, but you will appreciate this high quality fish on the BBQ as often as you like.

This one rod beat in Sogið, only 45 minute drive from Reykjavik, is perfect for those who don’t want to travel far from the capital for a couple of days of salmon fishing. The beat has the most salmon caught on the river per rod with around 100 to 150 salmon caught each year. It has a fantastic house that comes with the rod and plenty of activities in the area for all of the family.
