Lax-á in Scotland

We have recently come back from Scotland once again. Me and the family have been going to Scotland for many years now, especially my father. We were headed to Aberdeen, Scotland on our visit to the Hon Charles Pearson and meet up with Villi, Hanne Laure, Björn and Anna and their children. As usual the men were out and about on the river Lower Crathes, as early as 5 in the morning. We met up with them for lunch at the lovely hut. After lunch usually we swap turns for fishing and father, Arni, allows us to cast a little. The fishing was absolutely fantastic and nature in Scotland so beautiful. The fish were jumping all over the place teasing me a bit but of course it was up to the old man, dad, to catch them when acting like this. 13 salmon were caught in total after the week at Lower Crathes.

The time is almost at 18.00 - time for hunting. Perfect combining fishing and hunting in one trip, for me it is the perfect combination. Thursday, it was my turn to shoot. I went out, just a few steps from the lovely Birse Castle to practice. We drove for a few minutes until we saw this nice looking Roebuck, now it was all about the crawling and making no noise at all, for a talkative overactive person as me it can be a little tricky. I enjoyed hiking up the montain with its beautiful scenery. Finally we came close, my heart had been racing the whole way up the montain but suddenly stopped as to concentrate better. When I was about to pull the trigger my foot slipped a bit and the roebuck started running. As it stopped for those 3 seconds - pow, the perfect shot. One happy hunter went back to Birse Castle where I met up with the group and my sister Gunnhildur, she had been stalking as well, shot both a Roebuck and a Reddeer. Fantastic night and both sisters slept like little babies. My mother went out two days later and came back home with two Roebucks and the biggest smile on her face.

Mother with two fantastic Roebucks   Father with a Roebuck, take a look at its unique horns.

After a fantastic week with the most fun people, splended fishing, massive hunting and great food and company I and the family would like to thank the Hon Charles Pearson, our host for his most generosity. We had such a good time.

At the dinner table: Arni, Björn, Villi, I and Charles.   Dining in good company with great food.

Now, Sunday - time to meet up with Harpa and Stefan from the office, Mark and Amanda and Peter and Lotta.
We stayed at the Inch Marlow resort, very near Banchory. A very nice place. We kept fishing of course, now it was the Birse beat on the river Dee. My father was blossoming in the river as were the others enjoying themselves either in the river or watching closely.

At lunchtime father did what he does best, BBQ. I can honestly say I think the average weight gain in the trip was about 4 pounds per person.
We went out to dinner, more fishing, more stalking for Roebucks with great success and of course: more fishing. We caught 7 salmon at the Birse beat after 3 days.

I and the family would like to thank everyone involved, we had such a great time. I came back with the biggest smile on my face, weight gain about 4.5 pounds, 6pack stomach after all the laughter (it is just hiding behind the 4 extra pounds) and one extremely happy daughter of 2 years.

Precious grandfather and granddaughter time at the river bank.   Wathing the lambs with best friend - grandmother.

All my very best and looking forward to next year,

Valgerður Erla Árnadóttir

We start in the morning and head to the area around glacier Eyjafjallajökull. We drive on rough roads and cross numerous glacier rivers to reach Thorsmörk glacier and volcano valley. We spend some time exploring these adventurous surroundings. In the early afternoon we leave this lovely rugged environment and drive down to the black basalt sand shore south of Eyjafjallajökull-glacier. Right here by the Atlantic Ocean we experience the enhanced driving ability with the partly deflated 38" tires. In the end off the day we head back to Rangá lodge.

We have some very good days available in Hvannadalsa, one of our rivers in the West-Fjords. We have been cultivating this river for a number of years now, and the results have been extremely good. A couple of years ago the river nearly broke the 500 salmon mark – on  only 3 rods.

Like so many rivers in Iceland the prime season is from late July until late August, so these are very good dates.

Recent Catches

The River Dee saw a lot of anglers fishing the length of the catchment looking for the elusive salmon with catches reported from Park to Crathie. If you were in the right place at the right time there were fish to be caught. The numbers of fish running this river so far do appear to be well down on last year’s excellent spring catch with season to date catch of 1286 quite a bit down on the 5 year average spring catch of 2028. That said FishDee beats reported 143 salmon to 21 lbs and 8 sea trout. Carlogie had an excellent total with anglers catching 21 salmon, Aboyne Water and Birse reported 10 apiece with Ballogie and Cairnton just one behind on 9 apiece.

Blanda_opnun_2010_100607_8.jpg

The spring has finally arrived in Iceland and now we are all awaiting the summer with great anticipation. Even though the trout season has already started – we are all counting down the days until the salmon season starts. It’s only three weeks away.

Blanda is our first river to open on June 5th and in mid and late June other Icelandic rivers follow suit. Our new river Skjalfandafljot opens on June 18th (we are very excited about this one), the Ranga’s (East & West) come into play in the beginning of July and Vididalsa opens in late June. By July 1st all our rivers in Iceland have opened up.

Gaula in Norway and Kola and Varzina in Russia are in their prime in June – But Lakselva in Norway reaches the height of the season in July.

The Dee in Scotland has been open since the beginning of February and began with a bang, low waters plagued the river in March but things are looking up now.

In July we will welcome our first groups in the new hunting & angling camp in Greenland – our biggest hunting project to date.
