Team lax-a welcomes one of the top trout and char fishing river in the south underland to it´s fishing menu. Brúará river is with out a doubt, one of the best rivers there are in this area to land a big char or trout. Surrounded by a beutiful landscape, this crystal clear water runs with fish lying around in every corner. This is the second largest spring fed river of the country. It´s sources are numerous cold springs beyond the pass Bruarskord in the mountains. It´s name is derived from a former natural stone arch across it. One of the bishops' wives at Skalholt had her chef demolish it to prevent vagrants from frequenting the seat of the bishops.. Axelo

The river is about 38 km long and tributes to the glacial river Hvita. The best fishing spots are 4-5 km to the north of and 2,5 km to the south of the main road bridge across it, north of Skalholt. There are excellent fishing spots in that area and the catch is Sea Char, Sea Trout and the occasional Salmon. The river is excellent for beginners as well as experienced anglers. The driving distance from the capital Reykjavik city is about 85 km..
The best way to get there is to take road # 1 east out of Reykjavik almost to the town "Selfoss"and so turn left to road # 35 until you pass the Brúará, about 20 min drive. Spóastadir is the first farm across the river.to the right. Brúará is a good river for arctic char, both landlocked and sea running. You may also hook a salmon now and then. Some of the most productive beats belong to the farms "Spóastadir" and "Sel“ There is also a good trout fishing in the stream "Hagaós" joining Brúará east of "Mosfell".
That is considered the best stretch for salmon, beside the trout. Hagaós can be fished with 2 rods. Fishing in river Brúará can be nerv wracking!! The char is very clever and doesn´t grab just any fly, she knows her way around the flybox, so you will have to choose carefully and choose small flies. The leader has to be more than a rods lenght, no more than 3-4lbs, use a heavy fly for dropper, and a dark, small peacock in the end.
It is very important not to wade in the river and to carefully approach the river. Always start the casting about 3-4 m away from the bank, the big char is lying so close to the bank most often, and if she doesn´t spot you, she can be on fire and eat that fly like a grasshopper!! If the weather is sunny, it´s 100% guaranteed that the char is lying in the dirt bank in shallow water..
The best way to spot the char in Brúará is to sit down, have a coffe and watch the river for about 30 min, this way you will see that the char is rising and eating on the surface, informing you on it´s where abouts, preparing you for action, this sight can be quite amazing, always use this tecnique when fishing above the main road bridge. Best way to fish the river is upstream at all points, and you will find a hot spot before you know it.

If the river is coloured, but that happens very rarely, it´s good to use the local fly „heimasaetan“ , orange nobbler or just all bright coloured flies, tiny weighted though. Brúará river is not a fly only river, anglers can use spinners and life bait as well. Recommended flies to use are fallowing..Peacock with a pink neck, Mobutu, Munroe killer, Tail & Black versions, BP, The Hook, Heimasaetan, Flaedamus and last but not least, the heavy Myslan. Try them all, be patient and by all meanings be careful!! Brúará river can be fished from 1st of April to 1st of October.
Accommodation in Brúará river is similar to the one in Tungufljót river, we have nice and cozy summerhouses that can accommodate 4 anglers each time, offering 2 double rooms, with shared bathroom, Jacuzzy, bbq grill out on the porch, all so nice.
